Grading System

Daily Participation (10%)
10% of the student’s grade each trimester will be based on participation in daily band rehearsals. Students can earn full participation points by bringing all materials, following classroom procedures, and by participating actively in the day’s activities.

Lesson Preparation (20%)
Students will be expected to attend weekly band lessons as assigned. At each lesson, the student’s overall level of preparation will be evaluated. The average lesson preparation score will count for 20% of the student’s final grade for the trimester.   (More details)
Performances (20%)
There will be several required performances throughout the school year. Students will receive a participation grade for each of these performances. At the end of each trimester, the student’s performance grades will be averaged, and the final score will count as 20% of the student’s final grade for that trimester.
Written Exercises (15%)
There will be one to three written exercises (i.e. worksheets) per week. These written exercises will help students to develop an understanding of various musical concepts. At the end of the trimester, the scores of all written exercises will be averaged. The total value of these exercises will be 15% of the student’s final grade for the trimester.
Written Evaluations (20%)
There will be four written evaluations per trimester, roughly one every three weeks. These written evaluations will test student’s cognitive understanding of various musical concepts. Each evaluation will be worth 5% of the student’s final grade for the trimester, for a total of 20%.
Playing Evaluations (10%)
There will be a playing evaluation at the end of each trimester as well as small playing quizzes before major performances. These playing evaluations will account for 10% of the student’s final grade for the trimester.
Portfolio (5%)
Throughout the school year, students will be required to maintain a portfolio of band related assignments and materials. At the end of each trimester, student portfolios will be evaluated for completeness and organization. The portfolio grade will be worth 5% of the student’s final grade for the trimester.
