Jazz Ensembles

There are currently three jazz ensembles at Southeast Polk High School, both directed by Jayson Gerth. Jazz Two meets before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Jazz Three meets on Wednesdays from mid-October to early March. We have a great time learning about jazz and performing!

Jazz One is the premier jazz ensemble at Southeast Polk. Jazz One has received consistent superior ratings at the Iowa State Jazz Festival since 2004, and has performed at the Iowa Jazz Championships since 2010. During the 2011-12 school year, Jazz One performed at the Jazz Education Network's National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Iowa Bandmasters State Conference.

Jazz One Places 5th at Iowa Jazz Championships

posted Apr 25, 2011, 1:09 PM by Jayson Gerth

On Tuesday, April 12, the Southeast Polk High School Jazz One performed at the Des Moines Civic Center during the Iowa Jazz Championships. This invitational event draws 15 bands from each school classification in Iowa to form the largest single-day jazz event in the United States. Of the 15 bands that performed in Class 4A, SEP Jazz One received 5th place overall; its best finish at the IJC, and in only its second year playing at the event.

Receiving Outstanding Solo Citations were Nate Sparks on trumpet and piano, Dan Purscell on trombone, and Tanner O'Connor on guitar. Additionally, of all soloists in Class 4A, Nate Sparks was selected as one of the top four and received special recognition.

This caps event caps a tremendous year thus far for the Jazz Band, as it has placed no lower than the top three in any of the other jazz festivals in which it has performed.

The final jazz concert for this year will be held May 5th in the High School Auditorium at 7:00pm. The concert will feature both junior high jazz bands and both high school jazz bands. The concert is free and open to the public.
